Which Forms of ID Should You Use for Travel?

A lot of you are confused about which form of id to use when traveling.  For many people, if you are a United States citizen, you can use an original government-issued picture ID (i.e. driver's license).  Other forms of id could include a state photo id or enhanced driver’s license.  All forms of id must include a photograph and be current.  A current passport card is also an acceptable form of id.  Children who are traveling with you must have an original government-issued, or certified copy of their birth certificates. 

If you plan to travel abroad, passport books are necessary for all family members, including children.  Passport cards are not accepted for international air travel; however, if you board a cruise ship in the United States and travel to a port of call that is governed by a foreign country, passport cards are accepted, as long as you do not disembark the ship with the intention of taking a flight.

All forms of id must be current within six months of expiration.  If your id expires in less than six months by the date you are scheduled to travel, they won't be accepted.  So, we recommend you check your id for the expiration date and calculate when you will need to get it renewed, at least six months before you travel.
