Handicapped Parking

Most cruise ports do not exempt the handicapped from paying the parking fees, which can be exuberant in some places, while the vehicle owners go on a cruise.  They come back to fees which can run into the hundreds.  For older citizens, this can be a hardship, especially if they are on a fixed income.

If you have a handicapped registration plate or a placard and are planning to take a cruise out of Charleston, South Carolina, the parking is free at the cruise port.  If you are an early bird, you can safely park your car inside a secure building.

Florida is a bit more restrictive.  Cruise ports in Florida require your vehicle to be outfitted with specialized equipment or displaying the "DV" license plate issued in Florida is exempt from parking charges.

With a little research, you may be able to find a hotel near the port that allows you to park your vehicle for free or at a much cheaper rate than the cruise port parking lot.  It is worth the pre-cruise hotel fare, and it gets you to the port refreshed and on time without having to go through the hassle of traveling the same day you cruise.
