I got My Passport in Hand … Now Get Me on the Ship!

After waiting for what seems like years for the day to come when you finally travel to your cruise ship destination, all you are thinking about is days of lazing in a deck chair beneath sunny skies, sumptuous meals in enchanting dining rooms, glorious sunsets and exotic ports.  But, before you can do all that, there is embarkation.

Because of delays for any reason in getting disembarking passengers to leave the ship, embarkation itself can make it seem like hours you have to wait in line before even boarding.  No matter how early you get to the port, there is always a crowd waiting in front of you.  Embarkation can range from a stress-free stroll up the gangway on the smallest ships to something that resembles a mid-recession job fair on the largest, with the only difference being that you approach the desk with your passport instead of your resume.  By that time, you are exhausted from your trip and from the wait, your kids are cranky, and everyone is starved.

Your best bet to avoid starvation and cranky kids (for the most part) is to book a hotel close to the port a day or two prior to your sailing date.  Trust me, you will be refreshed and won’t be rushed trying to get to the port.  If you can, purchase some snacks for the whole family before you get there to alleviate the hunger pains.  You won’t mind the long lines as much, and it won’t be a mad rush to get to the buffet table once you get on board.

With its often long lines and waiting times, security checks and unflattering ID photos, embarkation is no one’s favorite part of a cruise.

But it sure beats disembarkation, every time.
