Experienced travelers know that the secrets to "having a good
trip" are to travel light, travel loose, and be prepared for the
unexpected. Keep that advice in mind as you look over the following tips:
- Choose luggage that is roomy and lightweight. Attach a name tag and address label to each suitcase.
- Set aside ample time in your pre-wedding schedule for packing. You will
suffer later if you pack in a hurry or at the last minute. Assemble everything
you plan to take before you begin packing and make a checklist. As you pack
each item, check it off. Take the checklist with you. You can use it on the
return trip, or if your bags should be lost, you'll have a list available for
insurance purposes.
- Don't pack more than you need, and leave some room in your luggage for
purchases or keepsakes, a great way to relive honeymoon joy.
- Each of you should take one carry-on and keep all important and
valuable items in it with you: jewelry; passport or other proof of citizenship;
tickets and vouchers; list of all credit card and traveler's check numbers;
packing checklist; prescription drugs (in their bottles with labels); birth
control items; camera; extra glasses or contacts and/or a prescription in case
you lose your one pair; sunglasses; and a small snack, crackers or candy bar,
to abate hunger in case the airline doesn't feed you.
- Scotch tape is a good travel companion. It can be used as a hem mender,
lint remover, or bottle sealer. Also, don't forget to include safety pins and a
sewing kit for minor repairs.
- Take along some plastic bags. They well insure safe packing for the
damp swimsuit you may wear for "one last swim," or lingerie that
didn't quite dry.
- The suntan lotion you use at home may not suffice for cruise travel to
tropical destinations. Reflection of the sun off the sea can leave a nasty sun
burn. Get a good sun block, and if you like, take a hat for protection. Limit
exposure to the sun, especially in tropical areas. Nothing can spoil a
honeymoon faster than a bad sunburn!
- Pack a basic first-aid kit with essentials such as antacids, aspirin,
antiseptic, Band-Aids, and sunburn lotion.
- If you tend toward motion discomfort (or are concerned about it), get a
prescription from your doctor or use an over-the-counter remedy; take it 30
minutes before you get on the plane or ship. Better yet, invest in a pair of SeaBands, or
similar brand acupressure wrist bands.
Trust me, they really work! Wear
at least one band 24/7 on and off the ship and you will have no motion
discomfort. I usually wear one, even in
the shower, then later swap it for the dry one, because motion sickness can
hit at any time, even in the shower or in bed.
Acupressure wrist bands are a great choice if you don’t, or can’t, take
medications.
- Pack a change of clothes in your carry-on bag. When you board your ship, you will go straight to your cabin, but your luggage may not get to you for a few hours. Having something comfortable to change into - shorts or even a swimsuit - so that you can immediately get into shipboard life will make your departure a lot more fun.
